This heat is then expelled through four sets of fins and dual fans, ensuring effective cooling of the laptop.

Upon removing the bottom shell, you’ll find that the laptop’s internals utilize a large vapor chamber covering the CPU, GPU, GDDR6 memory, and power supply module. The CPU and GPU employ Thermal Grizzly’s Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal as their cooling medium. The central vapor chamber extends towards the two sets of cooling fins at the rear of the laptop. The cooling fins on the laptop’s left and right sides use heat pipes to dissipate waste heat efficiently.

Software-wise, the ROG Strix primarily utilizes the Armory Crate software. The homepage displays comprehensive system information, including details about the CPU, GPU, memory, and fan. It also offers features for performance mode switching, GPU Mode, and system settings.

There are several performance modes for the laptop, including Custom, Turbo, Performance, Silent, and Windows. In the custom mode, you can adjust the maximum power consumption of the CPU and the Turbo clock rate. You can also overclock the GPU to increase the clock rate and set Dynamic Boost, power-saving, and other functionalities. Furthermore, you can establish the CPU and GPU fan curves simultaneously.

Typically, it’s recommended to use the Performance mode when the laptop is plugged in and switch to the Windows or Silent mode with the lowest performance when on the go. If you need the maximum gaming performance or laptop computing performance, you can switch to Turbo or Manual mode. However, the fan noise will also increase to about 40-50dBA, which is roughly the noise level that can be disregarded when wearing headphones.

The ROG STRIX SCAR as a “Hardware MUX” that allows you to switch between your graphics card and your CPU. If you want to use the MUX to switch to the GPU Mode to “DGPU” or “IGPU” mode, you have to restart the laptop. After restarting, the laptop screen will display in either the “Optimus” mode with “DGPU” or “IGPU”. The function of the Advanced Optimus will be disabled at this time. Off until the next time you switch back to “Standard” mode.

The highest Boost clock frequency is 5.4GHz, and the thermal design power (TDP) is 55W. The memory in use is a dual-channel 32GB DDR5-4800.

The GPU-Z utility provides information about the GeForce RTX 4090 notebook GPU. This GPU features 9728 rendering cores, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and a GPU Boost clock speed of 2090 MHz. It also supports the Resizable BAR functionality. The driver version used during the test was NVIDIA 531.68. The integrated graphics unit within the display is an AMD Radeon 610M.

The Adobe Premiere Pro 2020 conversion output test was conducted using the UL Procyon Video Editing Benchmark tool. The test conditions were a 2160p video at 30/60 FPS, and the output formats were H.264 – YouTube 1080p Full HD and HEVC (H. 265) – 4K UHD. The performance of pure CPU output was compared with that of GPU-accelerated output.
