AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX aims to compete with NVIDIA’s RTX 4080, FSR3 may support non-RDNA 3 GPUs

In an interview with PCWorld, AMD’s Frank Azor once again gave some details on their flagship RDNA3 graphics card, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and their new FSR3 technology.

When AMD introduced its Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, including the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, the company didn’t show any performance comparisons with rival RTX 40 series graphics cards. In fact, AMD didn’t show any performance comparisons with NVIDIA graphics cards, including the older RTX 30-series cards. The only comparison is with their older RX 6000 series cards like the RX 6900 XT and RX 6950 XT.

Now AMD Gaming Solutions and Marketing Chief Architect Frank Azor have revealed that the reason AMD isn’t doing any comparisons with the RTX 4090 (the only NVIDIA RTX 40-series graphics card currently available) is the fact that their flagship RX 7900 XTX isn’t at all Designed to compete with it.

Well, as far as pricing goes, that’s pretty much true, as the RTX 4090 is a $1599 (MSRP) graphics card and the RX 7900 XTX is a $999 (MSRP) card. In terms of pricing alone, that’s a 60% difference. While the 7900 XTX offers a 70 percent boost in performance over its predecessor, the company simply doesn’t see the 4090 as a major challenger in terms of pricing.

The actual competitor to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX that AMD sees is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 (16GB). The RTX 4080 is more comparable in terms of pricing, as it costs $1199, which is 20% more than the RX 7900 XTX. But even so, the RX 7900 XTX is definitely worth the money and has a memory advantage (24GB vs 16GB).

That’s not all Frank talks about. He also had something to say about FSR3 technology, suggesting that AMD may not limit it to its RDNA3 offerings, unlike NVIDIA’s proprietary DLSS 3 for its RTX 40-series GPUs. Frank says that FSR3 is not a response to DLSS3 and that work has been going on for some time. AMD makes very similar claims about FSR when comparing it to first-gen DLSS.
